How to Clean Your Makeup Brushes Properly to Prevent Breakouts

If you are dealing with sudden breakouts or stubborn skin irritation, your makeup bag might actually be holding the culprit. Every time you sweep a brush across your face, it picks up oil, dead skin cells, leftover makeup, and dust. Left unchecked, that cozy cluster of bristles quickly turns into a breeding ground for bacteria.
Giving your brushes a regular bath is one of the easiest ways to keep your skin clear, protect your investment in good tools, and make your makeup application smoother than ever.
How Often Should You Clean Them?
Foundation and concealer brushes: Wash these weekly. Because they handle liquid and cream products, bacteria multiply in them much faster.
Powder, blush, and eyeshadow brushes: Wash these every two weeks.
Eye brushes used with cream liners or shadows: Wash these weekly to avoid any eye infections.

What You Will Need
You do not need fancy, expensive brush cleansers to get great results. Simple household items work wonders:
Gentle baby shampoo or a mild clarifying facial cleanser
A small bowl of lukewarm water
A clean towel or paper towels
A silicone makeup cleaning mat (optional, but very helpful)
Step-by-Step Cleaning Guide
1. Rinse the Bristles
Hold your brushes face down under running lukewarm water.
Important: Never run water directly over the ferrule (the metal part connecting the bristles to the handle). Water can dissolve the glue holding the hairs in place, leading to shedding and loose handles.
2. Lather Up
Put a pea-sized drop of baby shampoo or cleanser into the palm of your hand or onto your cleaning mat. Gently swirl the tip of the brush in the soap to work up a lather.
3. Massage and Clean
Gently massage the bristles using your fingers to loosen trapped makeup. If you are using a textured cleaning mat, swirl the brush across it in circular motions, being careful not to bend the bristles too hard or pull them out of shape.
4. Rinse Thoroughly
Rinse the bristles under running lukewarm water again, gently squeezing them from the base outward until the water runs completely clear and all soap is gone.
5. Reshape and Dry
Squeeze out any excess water gently with a clean towel. Reshape the damp bristles back to their original form so they do not dry crooked.
Pro Tip: Lay your brushes flat on the edge of a counter or table with the bristles hanging slightly off the edge to air-dry. Never dry brushes upright in a cup of water will seep down into the handle and ruin the glue.

Enjoy Your Fresh Tools
Once your brushes are completely dry (usually overnight), you are ready to apply your makeup with a fresh, clean touch. Your skin will thank you, your makeup will blend much more evenly, and your favorite brushes will last for years to come!
