Brows & Hues: How to Pick Your Perfect Pigment Match

Let’s be real: choosing a microblading pigment is a bit like choosing a life partner. You want something that ages gracefully, looks great in photos, and doesn't turn a weird color when things get heated!
Whether you’re an artist-in-training or a client curious about the "magic potion" in those tiny bottles, picking the right shade is where the art truly happens. Here’s how to nail the selection every single time.
1. The Secret Language of Undertones
Before even touching a pigment bottle, we have to look at the "canvas”, your skin! Skin has hidden colors beneath the surface called undertones.
Cool Queens: If you have pink or blueish hints to your skin (and look great in silver), we use warm pigments to keep your brows from looking ashy or grey.
Warm Beauties: If you have golden or peach tones (and gold jewelry is your BFF), we use cooler pigments so the brows don't end up looking too orange or red.
Neutral Babes: You get the best of both worlds! A neutral brown usually stays true to tone on you.
2. Follow the "Root" Rule
It’s tempting to match brows to a fresh hair dye job, but hair color fades and changes! The safest bet is to match the natural root of your brow hair. This ensures that as your hair grows in, the microblading blends seamlessly like a natural shadow.
3. Trust the Fitzpatrick Scale
Think of this as the "SPF" of microblading. We categorize skin from Type I (very fair) to Type VI (deepest tones).
Light skin needs soft, translucent colors—think lattes and taupes.
Rich, dark skin needs high-contrast, concentrated pigments so the strokes don't disappear.
4. The "Ghosting" Phase is Real
Here’s a friendly heads-up: Pigment always looks darker the day it’s applied. As it heals, your skin grows a new layer over the ink, which "softens" the color by about 30% to 40%.
Friendly Reminder: We always prefer to go a little lighter and warmer during the first session. It’s much easier to "bold up" at your touch-up than it is to dial back a brow that’s too dark!
5. Quality Matters
We only use high-quality, stable pigments. Why? Because cheap pigments are prone to shifting colors over time. You want your brows to fade into a lighter version of themselves, not into a rainbow of blue or purple.
